Spays and Neuters

We pride ourselves in performing a very high standard of medicine especially when it comes to preventative medicine and surgical pain management.

We highly recommend spaying and neutering all pets for health, behavioral, and safety reasons. By spaying your female at 5-6 months of age you are significantly decreasing her risk of mammary tumors. You also prevent accidental pregnancy and a life threatening condition called pyometra (an infection of the female reproductive organs) that can happen at anytime in an intact female.

By neutering your male dog at 5-6 months of age you prevent some serious behavioral issues such as urine marking and aggression towards other males. You also prevent the escape and wandering mentality that goes along with finding a mate. Medically you prevent testicular cancer and serious prostate issues.

Spay/Neuter check list

We place an intravenous (IV) catheter and give IV fluids in almost all surgeries to maintain IV access for medications and in case of emergency. We use an individualized multimodal anesthetic protocol depending upon your pet's needs to ensure the safest anesthesia is performed. We also give all surgical patients pain medication and most an additional anti-inflammatory agent. Pain varies between individual patient's pain thresholds, as well as what surgery was performed. We therefore evaluate each patient individually to determine if they require additional pain medications after surgery.
