Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a non-invasive approach of using sound waves to evaluate the architecture of internal organs. This is a painless procedure therefore usually done without sedation.

We routinely use ultrasound to obtain urine samples with a needle (cystocentesis) and to evaluate the bladder wall and scan for bladder stones.

We will also routinely use ultrasound to evaluate masses found on abdominal palpation during the physical exam or abdominal x-rays. This can help us better determine which organ is involved and give us a better idea of what the best course of action is.

Ultrasound is also commonly used to safely pull excess fluid off the chest and abdomen of an animal to help them breath, and to help determine the cause of the fluid and treat the situation.

Lastly we will sometimes perform abdominal ultrasound to determine if there has been metastasis of a tumor to the liver or spleen prior to surgery of the primary tumor.
